There are many reasons due to which we are unable to balance our work & life like some say I have to work out, spend time with friends & family, happiness is missing and some say I don’t get Me Time.
So, there are some tips to balance your work and life:
It’s perfectly normal to be blank at work sometime, not able to focus, when you have no idea what’s going on and many more. But it should not extend 60 days and if it does you need to work on that.
Is Work and Life mutually exclusive? Yes, they can be but at some point of time in near future they meet at same point. In short-term, they perform at other levels but in long-term they meet.
In short term it’s easy for the brain to make compartments but not in the long run, you can understand this with an example a brain is like a wall of a dam, it can handle an amount of pressure but if the pressure will exceed the wall will break.
So the answer is No. In order to balance life and work, health gets compromised. For ex. Deepika Padukone had some problem in her relationship and it impacted her and she herself accepted that she was going through depression and because of all these things her work got compromised but it was for a short period of time.
So what many people do is they convert their negative energy to positive energy and this is a solution for only short run but if you’ll exceed this it will result in Career Burnout. So the word balance is wrong as it should be Work-life Integration not balance. And this concept was given by Jenifer Moss. There are few examples for better understanding of this concept:
Hrithik Roshan had some problems in his life which was for a long time and resulted in depression which resulted in his work also, Honey Singh was so much on trend with tremendous amount of work but due to his personal habits his career is on hold.
Shahid kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, they are the most undisciplined actors of Bollywood. And what about the most disciplined actors? The 1st position is of Akshay Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Amitabh Bacchan and Amir Khan.
And looking at their performance, it’s clear whose work is respected more.
Even a big businessman who has a hostile environment in their home, they leave everything. Some girls have so much talent but after marriage they don’t get that environment so they went down and vice versa.
We are going to work in order to enjoy with our family we are not having a family in order to enjoy at work. This is very important because the hostages of the 9/11 planes did not call their bosses or banks to know their balance from the satellite phones instead they called their family. And they were lucky as they knew they’ll be gone. But do we know? 8 out of 10 people say in their deathbed that it’s our biggest mistake that we never spend much time with our closed ones. And now after reading all these things what you guys will do is we start giving a lot importance to our friends and closed ones, start attending their small functions to spend more and more time and keep their work in the backburner and this is the biggest mistake you’ll ever make. It’s not that we have to impress each and everyone but only the closed ones which are very important. But if you want the people other than closed ones to be happy and give respect, you need to be just good at everyone but this will not work with your closed ones. And for this you need to redefine the meaning of Work & Life.According to the author John Coleman, “Work is what we have to do and Life is what we want to do.”
Work is the cost we pay to enjoy our life. So work here is not the official work but any work like you don’t like typing in office, you have to be a driver for your family, you have to be a koolie for your wife and you have to do this if you like it or not.
And life is like you love to give presentations in office, play with kids in your home, convincing clients in office, chill out with friends and have a meaningful discussion in office.
It’s not that official work cannot be life and vice versa, it is all integration. Basically everything you want to do is life and everything you have to do is work.
Purposeless and Joyless is misery.
Purposeful and Joyless is Drudgery.
Purposeless and Joyful is Superficiality.
Purposeful and Joyful is Flourishing & Fulfillment.
See the problem is we try to extract happiness from other things and not humans.
You can extract a lot of performance from BMW or MERC but only a little bit of happiness!
You can extract a lot of shelter from a luxurious house but only a little bit of happiness!
You can extract a lot of exposure from a long trip but only a little bit of happiness!
But you can extract a lot of happiness from humans with a little bit of responsibility or pain.
So what you need to do is see the activities you do in your daily life and in which category they fall under? And if your life is going down to misery then you need to find a purposeful activity to come up to Drudgery.
See now it’s understood that you need to enjoy life you need to work and I mean the work you want to do not the official work. So to do work you need a lot of energy.
Harvard medical school has concluded this with a research called Harvard energy project with Sony pictures that there are 4 kinds of energy: Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual and you need to have all of them in high amount to enjoy work and life.
